The Bachelor of Technology (commonly abbreviated as B.Tech. with Honours as B.Tech. (Hons.) or B.Tech) is an undergraduate academic degree conferred after completion of a three-year, a four-year, or even a five-year (such as in Nigeria) program of studies at an accredited university or accredited university-level institution. Universities that offer other degrees along with engineering named their engineering degree as B.E. (Bachelor of Engineering) and Institutes providing professional courses like engineering named their engineering degree as B. Tech. (Bachelor of Technology). B. Tech is considered as a skill-oriented course.
A bachelor’s degree in engineering provides students with the fundamental engineering training they need to start exciting careers in the engineering field.
The engineering courses in India are regulated and set up under the aegis of the University Grants Commission (UGC) and the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE).
In India, engineering qualifications include the following:
• Diploma in engineering (3/4 years, after class 10).
• Bachelor’s degrees (4 years, after class 12): BE (Bachelor of Engineering) and B Tech (Bachelor of Technology). Both are equivalent. Admission is usually through an engineering entrance examination.
• Master’s degrees (2 or more years, after BE, B.Tech, MCA or equivalent): ME (Master of Engineering), MTech (Master of Technology), MSc (Eng) (Master of Science in Engineering), MS (Master of Science), MCA (Master in Computer Application). Admission usually requires qualification in the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering or some work experience in engineering. The MTech and ME degrees are of 2 years duration, and usually have coursework in the first year and a project in the second year. The MSc (Eng) and MS degrees are usually research-oriented and may require 2 or more years to complete.
• Doctoral degrees (3 to 5 years): Ph.D. (Doctor of Philosophy). Admission requirements vary across universities but usually include a master’s degree in engineering or science or a bachelor’s degree in engineering with an excellent academic record.
Fundamental Differences between these degrees:
What is B.Tech.?
Bachelor of Technology is an undergraduate academic degree conferred after the completion of a three or four-year programme of studies at an accredited university or accredited university-degree level college in the Commonwealth of Nations, Norway, Republic of Ireland, the United States, and other countries. The common abbreviation for Bachelor of Technology is B.Tech. or B.Tech.(Hons), if awarded with honors.
The degree is awarded to those who have undertaken Bachelor of Science degree programme supplemented by either occupational placements (e.g., supervised practical or internships) or practice-based classroom courses. Due to the supplemental requirements, the degree takes typically at least four years.
In India, the Bachelor of Technology degree is used by the highly ranked and autonomous institutes such as Indian Institute of Technology (IITs), Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIITs), National Institutes of Technology (NITs) and Institute of Chemical Technology (ICT formerly UDCT) for professional engineering programmes. Most of the other institutions in India that are affiliated to a university use the Bachelor of Engineering (B.E.) degree.
What is B.E.?
Bachelor of Engineering (commonly abbreviated as B.E. or B.Eng.) is an undergraduate academic degree awarded to a student after three, four or five years of studying engineering at an accredited university in the United States, United Kingdom, Ireland, Canada, Finland, Australia, South Africa, New Zealand, Nigeria, China, India and Pakistan. It is a professional degree that involves undertaking some engineering work. This is controlled by the national professional engineering society or institute that accredits the universities, usually regulated by law.
Some institutions award either a Bachelor of Science (BSc) or Bachelor of Applied Science (BASc) degree to undergraduate students. In some cases, Bachelor of Engineering degrees is also given to students who take engineering courses. However, many universities in Canada only award the Bachelor of Applied Science degree for their accredited undergraduate engineering programmes (never the Bachelor of Engineering or Bachelor of Science degrees).
In India, the Bachelor of Engineering is a degree awarded by many universities. Bachelor of Engineering degree is awarded to a student who has completed four years course (eight semesters) in engineering. The entry to B.E is 10+2 years of schooling or completion of Pre University course(PUC). Diploma holders in engineering are also eligible for entry into B.E. Diploma holders of engineering enter degree course, by a lateral entry which gives some concessions in the study of subjects. The university awards the B.E degree in the field of engineering in which student has studied for four years
A Master of Engineering degree (abbreviated MEng., M.E. or M.Eng.) can be either an academic or professional master’s degree in the field of engineering.
In academic terms, a master is one who has completed a specific course of study at the post-graduate level. These degrees are granted by a number of different types of institutions and can take anywhere from two to four years to obtain.
What is a Master in Engineering Studies? These courses are most often taken as a bridge between an undergraduate degree and doctoral studies. The focus in these programs is usually on the academic side of engineering, with a typical selection of courses covering civil engineering, plastics, software engineering or environmental engineering. Classes may vary widely depending on the specific engineering focus of the programs, such as civil, computer, mechanical, or nuclear. However, courses tend to require a high level of mathematics and scientific performance from students and may include hands-on projects or theoretical dissertations as well.
One might expect to acquire a detailed knowledge of an engineering specialization over the course of one of these master’s programs. This might assist in various professional tasks as an engineer. Graduates may also improve their organizational and research abilities, skills that are useful in both personal and professional situations.
A Master of Engineering or Master of Science in Engineering can take one of two forms: an academic degree, or a professional degree emphasizing skills and practical analysis over the former’s theory and research. The types of engineering degree available to you will partly be determined by the country and the institution in which you have chosen to study.
For example, the Master of Engineering degree in Australia is a two- to three-year research degree with an end-of-year thesis, while in the US and Canada a Master of Engineering is a two-year professional degree taken after a four-year bachelor’s degree in engineering. In the UK the four-year postgraduate Masters in Engineering (MEng) is designed to prepare students to become chartered engineers and may extend to five years for students to spend a year in industry. Some universities in the UK now also offer Doctor of Engineering (EngD) programs. These lead to a qualification equivalent to a PhD but take a research-focused industry approach, rather than the traditional academic approach.
DIPLOMA in Engineering and Technology – Diploma programs are a higher education opportunity that schools around the world offer. This program is often a clear path to employment. The Diploma in Engineering, also Diploma of Engineering or Diploma in Technical Education are programmes focused on practical and skills-oriented training. It is a technical degree that only covers the essentials when ranked with an undergraduate engineering degree. It aims to provide students with industry or job related engineering knowledge, scientific skills, computing & analysis, mathematical techniques, a sound knowledge of English to communicate in the field and ability to apply problem solving techniques.
Its duration is 2–3 years. Many countries in the world recognize it as equivalent to Pre-Engineering or Bridging course when considered for continuing studies in engineering related bachelors or associate degree programmes. After successful completion of Diploma in Engineering course, students can either continue further Engineering studies in undergraduate level or specialize in certain fields with an advanced diploma. Diploma holders gets employment as technicians, technologists, supervisors, superintendents, foremen, machinist, workshop technicians, draughtsman, station technicians (energy, thermal, aeronautical), automobile technicians, maintenance & service technicians, equipment mechanics and technicians, CAD/CAM programmer, agricultural overseers, instrument technicians, junior instructors, manufacturing, tool and die designers, electricians…etc.
